Another day of preparation - 6 days left before we leave

A last check at Johanns Garage in Strand showed a broken fuse box,
while fixing that, the indicator broke. Now we have to wait for parts from Joburg,
... and replan ...

Thanks god we are fexible, that comes from long ago,
when we had a Catering Service in Germany and had to handle imponderabilities day by day.

We don't get stressed by that and thanks to Johanns remarkable abilities,
we will still leave at Wedensday next week.

Anyway this is the right place to say Thank you to some great people, without their help we could never do this trip.

Thanks to Johann and also Thanks to Christine and Dewald from Winelands 4x4 in Somerset West.

They both were always helpful, reliable and worth every cent we paid.

If you ever need a good workshop around Cape Town,
we will provide you with their contact details.

Travel Itinerary 2011 Update

Update 17. March 2011:

With the experience of our Coast to Coast - Meet the Oceans tour in 2009,
we
were able to plan this time much faster. Unfortunately we had to remove DR Congo
from
the list, the situation is still too uncertain but its still so bad.
The elimination
of the Congo makes the route to Angola a lot longer.
We
will decide in Lusaka, Zambia, whether we can go to Angola because there we have to get the visas.
The route leads now from South Africa to Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, back to Kenya,
Uganda, Rwanda, back to Tanzania, Zambia, Angola, Namibia, finally back home to South Africa.
If we do not go to Angola, Zimbabwe stands as a substitute on the program.
The time frame: April to October 2011
Scheduled Mileage: 60.000 km, including Ethiopia
Projected budget: 20,000 (without the vehicle, but with the modifications, Carnet, Comesa Yellow Card, etc.)
Vehicle and equipment: Our Mitsubishi Pajero 4x4, 2002, with LW Roofrack, ARB Bullbar and T Max Winch,
Old Man Emu sports suspension, tires Hankook Dyna Pro MT.
Technical equipment: Navigation with Garmin eTrex and nRoute software from Garmin (via laptop),
a data
logger Wintec WBT 202, a Power Inverter, 2 Acer Aspire 3935 notebooks,
a National
Luna Weekender Fridge 50 Twin with 40 l fridge and 10L freezer, dual battery system .
Camera Equipment: Nikon D50 with a Sigma 18-200 mm telephoto lens,
a Nikon D80 with a Sigma 120 - 400mm telephoto lens,
a
Canon EOS 40D with a Sigma 50 - 500mm telephoto lens,
last
but not a Canon HG 10 camcorder.

It is more than exciting and we can't wait to leave.

Today I created a new Newsletter Subscription page.

Animals at the Peninsula - a Hairy Field Spider next door

Some days before the mole rat approached us, another amazing animal visited us for three nights,
a probably Hairy Field Spider did build her nest next to our entrance.

The amazing thing is that this spider builds her web verey evening new,
after hunting by night the web will be eating when the night gets at his end .....
This happens in less than 10 seconds.

By day you could see her hanging around at one single thread,
waiting for the night, to build up the web again.

Animals at the Peninsula - a Mole Rat under the dinner table

Last week we had a pitch black, glossy snake under our trailer,
2 m long, the guys said it could be a Mole snake, but I wasn't sure,
some days later we saw one at the reception wich had a brown
pattern underneath and looked different to ours, which was very scary.

Yesterday, a mongoose jumped over the street, but today was the best of our sightings.
While we had dinner, a wonderful Beef roast made on theopen fire,
a 25 cm long, fat mole rat, which came out underneath our trailer, passed us,
headed under our car and than walked over the campsite,
while we followed her with the headlamps and made pictures.

Luckily the rat hadn't any snake behind her, but at the moment I listen to every unusual sound around here .....

A Great day .....

On Monday we started at 6 clock in Kommetjie. First we went to the gym at Steenberg, Westlake. After the workout, which we are doing now three to four times a week, we went to Cape Town to the Embassy of Mozambique. Our passports were delivered quickly and we drove to Somerset West. In our workshop, the Winelands 4x4, our car had already been upgraded earlier. New Old Man Emu suspension. Next to it, we got our new tires mounted. But what kind of tires, Hankook Dyna Pro MT. They look like tractor tires ....
With the new tires we went hastily back to the City. By 3 clock we could pick up the passports with the visas. What a prompt service. Such an unproblematic process one wishes for the Angolan Embassy .....

Now, our car has everything it needs.

Look at those tires:

Travel Itinerary 2011

We already started with planning in December 2010, but now, 5 weeks, before we start, it is getting very exciting. We have email-contact with different German companies in DR Congo and, unfortunatly it don't look very good for us:

Bukavu itself is calm at the moment.
However, there are still some parts of the surroundings that are not so secure,
especially by night. It is not advised to be outside of the city after dusky.
Also some parts of the city should be avoided by night. General situation
is supposed not to improve as the elections are approaching.
But, Bukavu itself (as well as other cities like Goma and Uvira)
is quite calm at the moment.

Here's where Bukavu is situated in the DR Congo:

So we are on developing Plan B: Our new itinerary leads us still through Namibia, Angola, in Angola up to the Foz de Congo near Sojo and back, than via Uige, Malanje to the Reserva Natural Integral do Luando and to the Parque Nacional da Cameia into the same area, but instead of crossing the border into DR Congo at Dilolo we drive to Zambia and cross there near Ikelenge, where we already have been in 2009, when we visited the fountain of the Sambezi River.

Thats the status at the moment:

Now, today we did read about riots at Mazabuka in Zambia, a town situated between Livingstone and Lusaka, we also have been there in 2009, but we are lucky, we don't need to drive into this area of Zambia.

But, why the hell must they now start fighting in Zambia?

I think we European won't never understand such events......

Tomorrow we will visit the Angola Embassy in Cape Town and apply for our visas.
Its getting HOT now!
